mending fence

fence-postMy friend Austen came out last weekend, and helped me put up a good portion of the orchard fence. Last Fall, the septic contractors had to tear a large section down to put in a new septic system.

We were VERY creative in this fence building endevour, as we used mostly materials we found on the ranch. We used 10, 4 foot T-Posts that were oringinally purchased last summer for those devilish goats, and we covered them in these 7 foot tall white metal polls that were lying in a scrap pile. We drilled a couple extra holes in the polls, so we would be able to bind the 5 foot tall wire fence to them, and we  used fence cilps to string barbwire along the tops. We also built a heavy duty corner using some lumber that was left over from the shop that was constructed a few years ago. I have to say I am quite proud of our handy work. Oh, and we found a little swinging chainlink gate on the upper acerage, so it’s now apart of our deer security system as well.

The past week, I have been pruing away on the apple and peach trees. They don’t appear to have been pruned in quite some time, and I was told to really cut them back, and open up the center of each tree to allow more sunlight in. I cut away all the overlapping and downward growing branches too, and I am very excited to see what the fruit production is like this year! I have a feeling I will be baking a hell of a lot of apple pies this fall!
